Aaron Lightner is a British member of the Talamasca, a secret order of historians and scholars. He studies the Mayfair Witches. (In the AMC Adaptation, Ciprien Grieve is a combination of characteristics from two characters in the novels: Michael Curry and Aaron Lightner.)

Dr. Petrie observes "a true Old World gentleman...in a narrow seersucker suit with a gold watch chain fixed to his vest pocket", "a man with the sharp melodious inflection of a British stage actor, and brilliant, ageless blue eyes". To the doctor, "the man was older than he seemed on first inspection. Perhaps sixty-five, even seventy." He thinks his expression is "affable and trusting, so inviting of trust in return".[1]

He meets Dr. Larry Petrie at the Parker Meridian Hotel in New York City some time after his experience with the Mayfair family at the First Street house and his encounters with Lasher. The doctor shares his story and notices that Aaron might be reading his thoughts. This is just before he goes to California to make contact with Michael Curry.[1]
