King Enkil was the King of Kemet around 4,000 BCE, and became the second vampire in existence after being turned by his wife, Queen Akasha.
Enkil was the son of the Queen of Kemet, and, having had no close female relatives to marry to continue his royal line, married Akasha of Uruk. At some point, he and Akasha have a son, Seth. Akasha brought her people's inclination towards agriculture to Kemet, and was horrified by cannibalistic practices in some communities in the surrounding regions.
Enkil outlaws cannibalistic funeral practices. After two cannibal witches, Maharet and Mekare, are brought to Kemet and asked to show Akasha the source of their power, their familiar spirit Amel terrorizes the Queen. Enkil intends to sentence the witches to death for the crime of practicing black magic, but Akasha convinces him to instead release them. Before the twins are released, Enkil orders his chief steward, Khayman, to sexually assault the twins on his behalf. Later, when he and Akasha were attacked by assassins and left to die, a powerful spirit named Amel intertwined himself with Akasha's spirit as it was leaving her dying body and then forced their combined spirits back into her, making Akasha the first vampire. Akasha then turned to Enkil dying beside her and healed his wounds by replacing the blood he lost with hers, making him the world's second vampire.
Over time, after periods of warfare between vampires and being imprisoned, Akasha and Enkil become silent and immobile, and known as Those Who Must Be Kept. Around the beginning of the first century, a caretaker called the Elder leaves Akasha and Enkil in the sun, and Enkil is largely unaffected while other vampires burn. After this event, Akasha and Enkil no longer allow caretakers or other vampires to drink from them. When Akasha instructs Marius to take them out of Egypt, Enkil initially rises, but then returns to silence and allows himself to be taken with her.
At numerous points in the canonical history of The Vampire Chronicles, Enkil rises from his throne to defend Akasha, Marius speculating that he covets her. When Lestat drinks from Akasha is forced to rescue him from being destroyed by Enkil after Enkil in a jealous rage.
Enkil's time in stasis ends in 1985 when the music of the vampire rockstar Lestat rouses Queen Akasha. Akasha drains him completely of blood after awakening, leaving his body a glass-like husk.
