First Street House, 1239 First Street, New Orleans
The First Street House, built in the 1800s, is the main home of the Mayfair clan during most of the 20th century. The house is central to the novel The Witching Hour, and continues to play an important role throughout the Lives of the Mayfair Witches. It appears in The Vampire Chronicles in Blackwood Farm and Blood Canticle, as the home of Rowan and Mona Mayfair.
The First Street House, located at 1239 First Street in the Garden District of New Orleans, belonged to Anne Rice at the time The Witching Hour and the other novels featuring the location were published. It is currently under different private ownership.
Description[]
During Deirdre's Life[]
When remembering his time at the house, Dr. Larry Petrie, who is treating Deirdre Mayfair, describes the "debilitating heat", "drowsing scent of roses, of gardenias", "hum of flies in the summer" and the "smell of medicine". He thinks of where the house sat as a "gloomy New Orleans corner".[1]
