Florence de Pointe du Lac is a recurring character on the AMC gothic horror drama, Interview with the Vampire. She is portrayed by Rae Dawn Chong.
Florence is Louis' recently widowed mother. A creole accent and a commanding presence, she often turns a blind eye to Louis' business and how he supports the family. They have always been close, though she does blame Louis for his brother Paul's death, which causes irreparable damage to their relationship.
Biography[]
Grace's wedding and Paul's death[]
Florence had breakfast with her children, who were all arguing for various reasons, though Paul seemed to be at the center of it all. He was upset with Louis for a prior altercation they had the night before and for the manner in which he was handling the family business, though Florence insisted that it was merely temporary until he could find more respectable business. Paul was also upset with Grace for agreeing to marry Levi Frenier, who was a Baptist, whilst they were Catholics.
In the days following a slightly confrontational dinner with Louis' business partner Lestat de Lioncourt, Grace's wedding was held. However, tragedy would strike following the ceremonial event, as Paul would kill himself by jumping off the roof. Stricken with grief, Florence blamed Louis for this, suspecting that he must've said something that led Paul to jump off. She was reminded that those who killed themselves didn't make it into heaven's gates, meaning that Paul was in Hell because of Louis.[1]
Having been half a season since she'd seen him last, the tension was thicker than ever before when Louis finally returned home. Louis read her mind and could hear his mother's crude remarks about his nails and glasses, to which Louis replied that his doctor advised him to wear the glasses due to the sensitivity of his eyes.[2]
Florence telling Louis to leave
Florence approached Louis as he arrived at the house during the late hours of the night for the twins' birthday. She obstructed his path, explaining that the party was over and that if Louis wanted to come by, he'd have to do it in the daytime. Six months since his last visit, Florence told Louis that he wasn't welcome, but given that he owned the home, he wasn't too concerned, though he did catch her remark about how "The Devil walks at night." Levi joined them outside the house and attempted to block Louis' path to the front door. Enraged, Louis kicked down the door with great force, startling Grace and the twins.[3]
Death[]
After Florence death, Grace called Louis and invited him to the wake, to which he brought Lestat and a young girl named Claudia, who Louis claimed he adopted off of Liberty Street.[4]
