Louis healing

In the aftermath of his fight with Lestat, Louis was left with a few shattered vertebrae, a punctured lung, and blind in one eye for more than 5 weeks. He took naps at night and would feel the air against his skin as if he was falling. Excruciating pain was the only proof that he was still alive. In that time, Claudia took care of Louis, slowly nursing him back to health.

Present day, Louis explains to Daniel how Lestat could fly, or more accurately float. Not like Superman, but more so arising at will, which he referred to as the "cloud gift," which most vampires didn't possess. With few exceptions, only the most ancient of vampires had such a gift. Daniel then reveals that he's been dreaming about his and Louis' first meeting, but he keeps waking up just before Louis asks him back to his apartment. Daniel then asks if Louis can fly, which he can't, and up until that moment, he had no idea Lestat could either. Louis supposes that Lestat never told him because he thought if he revealed all his power to him, then he would never feel his equal, but Daniel isn't convinced, comparing Louis to a battered wife with Stockholm.

Lestat had disappeared after that night, leaving Louis and Claudia at the Rue Royale, where Claudia dedicated all her energy to Louis' rehabilitation. Once he was able to walk, she released a lamb in the apartment for Louis to hunt, but he was too weak at the moment to hunt.

Claudia helping Louis

Claudia held a hat in her hand whilst Louis accurately threw cards into it from across the room, during which point, he told her that if she ever wanted to talk about what happened when she was gone, he would be a friendly ear. The doorbell then rang. Claudia answered the door to find Lestat on the other side with a gift for Louis: The Book of Hours. However, neither Claudia nor Louis appreciated his return, further indicated when Louis tossed Lestat's coffin out the window.

Three years had passed since that fateful night. Making another attempt to apologize, Lestat purchased Louis a Rolls-Royce, revealing that he was back in town after heading across the river to Algiers. Lestat insisted that he'd changed and sought an opportunity to prove it. While Louis seemed to ponder forgiveness, Claudia took the keys and threw them back at Lestat before clawing the car and leaving with Louis in tow.

Lestat would spend the next three years showering Louis and Claudia with gifts in hopes of forgiveness. And it was his relentlessness that cracked Louis' armor. In the spring of 1937, he sent Louie a song he had written himself. He played all the instruments himself and pressed only one album. He had made the near perfect valentine, with only one flaw, a perfectly premeditated flaw in which Lestat had Antoinette sing the female vocals. Enraged, Louis broke into Antoinette's home and confronted Lestat, instructing Antoinette to leave. Once she was gone, Louis and Lestat embraced, with Antoinette watching from outside as Louis explains in present day that their vampire bond was like no other of human comparison.

If Louis and Claudia were to accept Lestat back into their lives, he would first have to agree to a list of ground rules, one of which being that he had to kill Antoinette, with another rule being that Claudia would be Lestat's companion or sister, but he would never be her uncle or father. And the most important rule of all being no lies, including exaggerating or omission. Lestat conceded and agreed to answer any questions. Louis asked if Lestat had anything to do with Paul's death, which he insisted he didn't. Claudia then asked about Lestat's maker, who he claimed was a vampire named Magnus. He took Lestat from his room in Paris and kept him locked in a room full of corpses that resembled him. He fed on Lestat every night. Lestat thought he would be the next corpse, but Magnus instead turned him into a vampire. Magnus was a poor excuse for a maker; he offered no rules, counsel, or grand vampiric history. He only offered Lestat money and the sight of him throwing himself into a fire, leaving Lestat utterly alone. He cried and call to god, unsure what to do with his immortality.

Years accumulated in the small city was catching up to them; their home was often vandalized with spell craft and warnings, suggesting they were no longer welcome. It was an awkward time. Whilst Louis loved both Lestat and Claudia, they did not seem to share their affection for each other. While out on the hunt, Lestat asked if Claudia still fed on people or if she changed her diet to suit Louis' conscience. Claudia's diet remained the same, though with Lestat, it always made him feel loathsome and looked down upon by Louis for his body's needs. Surprisingly, Claudia felt the same, as if she was only being tolerated. Lestat feared that it would breed resentment and proposed that they only hunt human. Without saying a word, Louis seemingly agreed and followed a man headed down the path.

Louis pleaded with Claudia to try a bit harder to get along with Lestat, but she was doubtful that anything with him had changed and accused him of being a compulsive liar. Lestat then entered with a newspaper, and wrapped inside was Antoinette's severed finger and an article claiming that the lounge singer died in a fire. Claudia tossed the finger, but kept the ring. Lestat proposed that they repair the mantle, but Claudia retorted that they leave the damage so that it would never be forgotten. Again, Louis pleaded with Claudia to be less hostile to Lestat, but she remained unconvinced that his intentions were genuine. Louis, while joining Lestat in his coffin, instructed him to give the girl a little more time, but Lestat feared that she came back darker than when she left.

Louis quietly watched as Lestat and Claudia played a game of chess, in which Claudia poked and prodded about Lestat's past, mainly his first love Nicolas. But Lestat wouldn't be distracted by her thinly veiled interrogation tactics. Lestat claimed that Nicky passed on after they parted ways, and that it took him over a century to try again. He then checkmated Claudia, who proceeded to antagonize Lestat until he left to hunt.

Despite claiming that he was going to feed, Lestat instead visited Antoinette, who was in fact alive and well despite claiming that he killed her. However, he did actually cut off her finger in order to sell her murder. Antoinette proposed that they go away to a big city for a better future, but Lestat claimed that New Orleans was the only city for him, much to Antoinette's disappointment. Stashed away at a run down hotel, she questioned how she was supposed to make a living, but Lestat wasn't concerned with her concerns, though he did assure her that his promises would be kept. Unbeknownst to the two of them, Louis and Claudia listened from outside as Lestat told Antoinette that he loved her.

Louis and Claudia learning that Lestat lied

This discovery was numbing for Louis but not necessarily surprising. Louis suspected that Lestat wanted them to discover him because he was manipulative. Louis had no intentions of confronting Lestat, doubtful it would make a difference.

From her coffin, Claudia telepathically spoke to Louis as he and Lestat had sex, informing him that a train left every night for New York. They could hop on a boat, sails set for anywhere, though Claudia had a few destinations in mind, namely Prague, Bucharest, Varna, Silistra, and Ploiesti, all ancient towns known for vampire inhabitants.

Claudia asking Louis to join her

After Lestat departed, Louis confided in Claudia that in 100 years, he could see a scenario where they ended up like Lestat. Claudia refused, informing Louis that the trained left in an hour, hopeful that he would be there with her to board it. However, Louis encouraged Claudia to go without him. She did so reluctantly, but not without embracing Louis one last time. And so, Claudia, all by her lonesome, hopped a train headed out of New Orleans, hiding out in the luggage cart.

Present day, this was the part of Louis' story where Daniel originally asked for Louis to turn him. In the eyes of a 20-year-old Daniel, Louis was wasting his gift. Because he too is in his 20s, Louis asks Rashid what he thought. He did not agree with Daniel and did not see it as a waste. Louis would admittedly give Daniel the dark gift now, with him having now lived a full life, getting the chance to watch his daughters grow up and marry. But Daniel was no longer interested.

Louis teased the sun that night in Jackson Square. He thought about the walking cane and pile of ash they'd find in the morning, but Paul had forever ruined Grace's wedding night, and Louis would not do the same to Claudia on the anniversary of her escape. And so, Louis went home, where he found Lestat waiting with Claudia. As it turned out, Lestat hunted Claudia down. He killed the train conductor and ripped off his head before tracking her down to the luggage bay, where he informed Claudia that Louis needed her. He wasn't in his right mind, and he needed the both of them by his side. It was for that reason that Lestat could not allow Claudia to leave. Not like she did last time when she filled her head with knowledge and hitched a ride with Bruce, who Lestat was aware of. Fortunately, Lestat could hear the thoughts of other vampires at great distance. Bruce thought of her often. Lestat reminded Claudia that they endured each other because of Louis' happiness. And if she ever tried this again, he would do more than snap her leg, defile her pocket, and zoom off on a motorbike; he'd turn her to dust.

Whilst playing another game of chess with Lestat, Claudia telepathically communicated with Louis, revealing that she suspected that Lestat killed Magnus because he tried to make Lestat a slave. Much like they were to Lestat now, which Claudia refused to allow to continue much longer. Louis pleaded with Claudia to stop what she was thinking, but she persisted. Claudia revealed to Louis her plans to kill Lestat all the while continuing to beat him in their chess game. Not only did Claudia want to kill him, she suspected that Louis wanted to kill him too. Realizing that Claudia had nearly won, he encouraged her to finish the game, but she simply got up from her seat and headed upstairs, infuriating Lestat, who knocked over the chess pieces in a moment of rage.

Present day, Louis explains to Daniel how he and Claudia were going to kill Lestat, but Daniel had drifted off from his medication. Whilst he slept, Daniel dreamed of his first encounter with Louis at the bar in 1973. A young journalist at the time, he entered Mary's and took a seat at the bar, where he was joined by Louis, who claimed that his great-great-grandfather owned a plantation. Daniel mostly did interviews and offered to interview Louis, who invited Daniel back to his room and explained that he was a vampire. They were joined by Rashid, who looked as young and youthful as he did present day. Louis asked if he wanted to join them, but Rashid told Louis to go ahead and have his fun. Daniel then awakens from his dream, shocked by his discovery.
