After leaving Pointe du Lac plantation, Louis and Lestat move into a Spanish-style building in New Orleans, which becomes a central and recurring location throughout the series. Occasionally referred to as a town house, it is a flat over a street level business with a ground level carriageway providing access to a rear courtyard. In Interview with the Vampire the ground floor tenant is a tailor, in The Tale of the Body Thief it is now a bookstore. The interior of the flat has a front parlor, a back parlor, and six bedrooms (Claudia's is referred to as the "middle bedroom" in The Queen of the Damned) along a central hallway. The front parlor opens to a porch overlooking the street, the back parlor is used as the main entrance and opens to a spiral flight of stairs that go down to a hidden courtyard with a fountain. The back porch also has a hidden set of stairs leading up to a full-sized attic. There is a brick kitchen building across the courtyard from the house.
The flat sits abandoned between the events of Interview with the Vampire and The Tale of the Body Thief, but is restored during the latter novel. In The Queen of the Damned, Jesse Reeves is sent to the building to investigate it, and encounters Claudia's ghost. Louis and David are living together in the home in Merrick, but have left it due to their conflict with the Talamasca as of Blackwood Farm. Quinn Blackwood breaks into the flat to leave a letter for Lestat, where he encounters his friend and Talamasca agent, Stirling Oliver, who he attacks, before Lestat returns and saves Stirling. In Blood Canticle, Lestat moves back into the house.
Louis and Lestat meet at the home in Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis, but move to Lestat's Château in France. In Blood Communion, Lestat returns to the house briefly, as vandals have broken in and destroyed one of Louis's favorite paintings.
The inspiration for Lestat's townhouse is the Gallier House in the French Quarter of New Orleans, though the home itself was constructed much later than Lestat's home is in the novels. The Gallier house is located at 1132 Royal St, New Orleans, LA 70116, and was used as an exterior filming location for the 2022 AMC Interview with the Vampire, with the townhouse interiors being filmed on soundstages. Today, it is a historic landmark and history museum.
