St. Alphonsus is the Catholic parish church in New Orleans near the Irish Channel neighborhood that Michael Curry attends with his family during his childhood. The church was built by Irish workingmen by "dragging the stones from the river, laying the mortar, collecting for the beautiful statues that came from Europe." It is located directly across the street from the German parish church of St. Mary. As the churches were built, the Irish and German immigrants tried to outdo one another. The two groups refused to go to Mass with each other even though the same priests said Mass at both churches.
