Biography[]
Midwife life[]
1681, Donnelaith, Scotland, Suzanne and her sister Florie go searching for willow bar and burdock at the behest of their mother, who is tending to an ill man. While picking flowers in the field, they're joined by the village glovemaker, who appears from behind a tree and who Suzanne reluctantly pleasures while Florie closes her eyes and counts every herb they've picked that day, as instructed. As this unfolds, the crows above them then begin to caw as voices whisper Suzanne's name.[1]
Suzanne tends to Aoife, who has suffered a deadly injury after a run-in with a boar. Suzanne attempts to save her using yarrow, but Aoife insists she use black henbane and feverfew, explaining that she wanted to "fly" before her death. She further explains to Suzanne that the work of a midwife is more than just cures, as death is their work too. Admittedly, Suzanne is scared of death, as she doesn't truly believe His scriptures or the certainty of soul's continuance in the afterlife. Nevertheless, Aoife wishes to go into the earth, with her mother, and her mother before her.[2]
Suzanne struggles to hold back tears as Aiofe's body is taken away. However, an elder Scottish woman tells Suzanne to save her tears and that she'll come for her later in the night, which she does. The older woman takes Suzanne to a secret gathering in the woods with many other women, all who've come to mourn Aiofe as they please.[3]
Accused of witchcraft[]
Suzanne is accused of poisoning the glovemaker's wife after she gives birth to a web-handed child. The glovemaker hands the child back over, declaring that it's not his son. The next day, Suzanne stops by the glovermaker's home to deliver nourishments, but neither she nor her husband answer the door, likely due to the fact that the town has gathered in the street to hear the tales of the witchfinder's latest conquest. Among the entranced crowd is the glovemaker, who makes eye contact with Suzanne. The witchfinder recites the following phrase "Mi Daemon, ad me veni. Mi Daemon, mihi labora. Mi Daemon, me libera," which Florie repeats until Suzanne warns her that his words are wicked and to never repeat them.[4]

Suzanne is caged
Suzanne is dragged out of her home by the witchfinder, who accuses her of being a witch. She recalls healing many villagers, but they've all turned against her, with the witchfinder claiming that she's healed many through devilry and congress with Satan, who grants her the powers of dark magic, but Suzanne insists that healing is God's work and that she'd learned the midwife trade from earthly women. Unfortunately, the villagers aren't convinced and begin throwing rocks at Suzanne, who will have to face the river. As Suzanne is carried away in a cage by the villagers, Florie is being taken away by the glovemaker. With her life on the line and no other options, Suzanne recites the wicked word of the devil, causing a fire and for the villagers to flee. Before long, Lasher appears, killing Suzanne's captors and freeing her with the necklack key from around the witchfinder's neck. As the village burns, Suzanne asks if she's a witch. Lasher replies that she's his witch. She will have everything her heart desires, and in return, she is bound to fulfill an ancient prophecy.[5]
Suzanne appears to Lasher, who is trapped in a memory he initially believes to belong to the necklace, which Suzanne wears around her neck. However, when he tries to grab it, Lasher appears and informs Ciprien that it's his memory they're in.[6]
The prophecy fulfilled[]
Suzanne waits in the mausoleum for Rowan to awaken, at which point, she encourages Rowan to be brave and explains that she's there to deliver the baby, who Lasher has embodied. Rowan then goes into labor, with Suzanne guiding her through as Cortland watches from a distance. Rowan gives birth to a baby boy. Suzanne explains that if Rowan accepts him, he will give her power. The baby then begins to transform before her, startling Rowan, who hands him over to Suzanne before fleeing.[7]
