Vampires are supernatural predators. They are reanimated human corpses inhabited by the spirits of the deceased. Nocturnal by nature due to their vulnerability to the sun, vampires hunt at night, and their immortality is dependent upon the consumption of blood, preferably human.
History[]
The origin of vampires remains unknown. In terms of population, in 1910, according to Lestat, they were few in number, possibly only 100 in total. However, in recent years they have experienced a surge in growth, with Raglan James of the talamasca estimating 1600 active vampires in the modern day.
Creation[]
“ | Your body is confused. Your lungs feel like water, your heart, fire. You feel as if you're dying, because you are. | ” |
–Lestat |
Vampires possess the ability to pass on The Dark Gift/vampirism to mortals should they wish to do so. In order to become a vampire, a human must be drained of blood until they are at the very threshold of death. The human must then feed on a substantial amount of blood from the vampire performing the conversion, referred to as their maker, to replace the blood they have lost.[1] This process is both intimate and frightening, with the human's heart rate slowing and synchronizing with their makers as their body begins to circulate the vampire's blood through their system. The transition reconfigures the mortal's human body into a new immortal existence. For a short time after rebirth the newborn vampire, referred to as a "Fledgling", experiences a myriad of conflicting sensations. In many ways the mortal body dies so the immortal one can be born. Feeling excruciating pain and intense euphoria, waves of heat and cold, retching and feeling ill while being filled with vitality.[2] When the process is complete any wounds, diseases or physical impairments the mortal possessed in life are completely healed within a short time, their senses are enhanced to a supernatural degree, their eyes change into a striking shade several times lighter than the mortal's natural hue,[3] they grow a pair of retractable razor sharp fangs, their fingernails become translucent and grow to form natural razor sharp claws and their natural beauty is heightened as a way to attract their ideal pray, humans.
Powers and abilities[]
Vampires are supernatural predators, who sustain their immortality and superhuman physical prowess by ingesting blood. Vampires acquire their abilities immediately following their transition.
- Immortality: Upon their transition, vampires will gain eternal life; never growing older and remaining the same age indefinitely. Vampires are also immune to human disease and illness and are invulnerable to most conventional causes of harm and fatality.
- Superhuman Strength: Vampires, regardless of mass or size, possess superhuman physical prowess; they are remarkably strong and predatory. Vampires can easily overpower, lift, toss and maim their prey; Louis, Claudia and Lestat could easily overpower their victims. Vampires also grow stronger with age; as Lestat could easily overpower and toss around Louis and was strong enough to crush a grown man’s skull. Physical maturity may also affect a Vampires strength; as Claudia was easily overpowered by the Vampire Bruce.
- Superhuman Speed: Vampires can run and move faster than any human is capable. Vampires can move at speeds akin to a predatory animal; they can suddenly appear and disappear, rapidly chase down and tackle prey, and quickly and easily run, jump and sprint, often appearing as a blur during acceleration.
- Superhuman Senses: Vampires have heightened, predatory senses of sight, smell and hearing; when Louis first transitioned, the red-light district was illuminated with overwhelming detail, as if he had walked his entire life as a dead man, and now, dead, could finally receive the secrets of existence. A Vampire’s heightened senses allow them to hunt and track their prey; they can smell their prey across a great distance, track them via scent, and hear their heartbeat from afar.[2]
- Telepathy: Vampires possess the ability to hear and see the thoughts of humans and other vampires. This gift allows Vampires to telepathically communicate with each other across the globe by projecting their thoughts across thousands of miles. However, Vampire makers and their fledglings are incapable of reading each other's minds as seen in the case with Louis, Claudia and Lestat.[2] With time and practice a vampires' telepathy can become exceptionally powerful. Allowing them to dominate the minds of humans and weaker vampires. Manipulating their thoughts, actions and even memories. Conversely, vampires can also learn to protect their minds from intrusion, but an older stronger vampire may be able to bypass a weaker vampires mental defense. Vampires such as Lestat and Armand have shown capable of dominating the minds of dozens of humans at once with great effort, implanting thoughts and actions or ostensibly freezing them in place.
- Fangs and Claws: Vampires possess retractable, razor sharp fangs, that can easily bite into and tear human flesh and animal hide. Vampires also possess ever present nails that are inhumanly sharp, and can easily carve into flesh.
- Bestowal of The Dark Gift: Vampires possess the ability to bestow the Dark Gift (Vampirism) to mortals through a specific ritual of creation; this process involves the siring Vampire drinking the mortal's blood, followed by the mortal drinking the siring vampire's blood. Physical death follows immediately after, before rising moments later as newly made vampires, also known as "Fledglings." Some vampires, such as Claudia, cannot do this due to not having enough blood in her adolescent body to replace the blood she drinks from her adult victims.
- High Pitch Scream: Vampires can raise their voices to very powerful levels, such as being able to produce high pitched screams that can shatter glass. Claudia displays this ability, breaking a mirror in the process, however she seems surprised she can do this.
- Flight: Known as the "Cloud Gift," Lestat described it to Louis as floating, arising at will, propelling in a direction by the decision. Most vampires do not possess the cloud gift, with a few exceptions (either reborn with it naturally which is exceedingly rare or having drunk from an ancient vampire and gained it as a result) only ancient vampires can do this due to having naturally gained the power from such immense age.[4]
- Pyrokinesis: Known as the “Fire Gift”. Some vampires have the ability to create and manipulate fire. Most vampires do not possess the Fire Gift, with a few exceptions (either reborn with it naturally which is exceedingly rare or having drunk from an ancient vampire and gained it as a result) only ancient vampires can do this due to having naturally gained the power from such immense age.
Weaknesses[]
- Sunlight: Vampires are vulnerable to the UV rays of the sun; they burn on contact, and prolonged exposure results in death. This vulnerability decreases with age and can fully disappear with time as well (Armand being over 500 years old is able to withstand full exposure to bright sunlight without any discomfort at all.)
- Fire: Vampires are vulnerable to fire just as humans are but more so due to the changed blood in their systems that is very flammable. If a vampire is not able to escape the flames of a powerful sustained fire they will die. If they are able to escape what follows is several years to decades of healing and recuperation.
- Bloodlust: Along with their eternal life comes a never-ending and overwhelming lust for blood. Older vampires do not need as much blood as they age but still experience the craving for it.
- Dead blood: Drinking the blood of the dead will result in either extreme debilitation or death for a vampire, depending on how strong the vampire is and how much was drunk.[2] [5]
- Slumber: Vampires who must slumber when the sun rises due to youth, are extremely vulnerable to being trapped, harmed, or attacked due to being fully unconscious when slumbering.
- Decapitation: Removing the head of a vampire will result in an instant death.[5]
- Starvation: Vampires who abstain from blood for prolonged periods of time will eventually die.[5]
- Insanity: Vampires whose minds are "fragile" or who were made too young often go mad in time.
